Hygiene and Cleanliness

It is important to keep your clover clamps as clean as possible. It is not possible to truly sterilize clover clamps because the rubber tips cannot withstand the heat of an autoclave or pressure cooker. Therefore, it is preferable that Clover clamps not be used with multiple partners, especially if the tips have come in contact with blood or sexual fluids.

You can clean the pads of the clamps with soap and warm water, or antibacterial cleanser. Alcohol or any oil based cleaner will cause the rubber of the pads to degrade and should not be applied. The metal parts of the toy can be washed with mild soap and water, wiped with alcohol, antibacterial cleaner, or 10% bleach solution. Make sure to thoroughly dry the metal parts after cleaning to prevent the joints from rusting.

Aftercare

There are several major considerations for aftercare when using a Clover clamps: checking the skin and tissues for damage, and taking someone out of subspace gently.
Ice can be applied to the nipples after the clamps are removed to soothe lingering soreness. If the clamps abrade the skin or cause bleeding, anti-bacterial soap and water should be used to cleanse the area. Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus etc. If there are any extended signs of infection call your doctor or seek out medical attention. Check the areas for nerve damage or blood vessel damage. If the skin goes numb, and sensation does not return to the area after removing the clamps, there may be nerve damage and you should seek medical attention immediately. Alternately, if the submissive continues to experience extreme pain (some soreness is normal) even after the clamps or removed, there may be tissue damage and medical advice should be sought.

Subspace is the mental state a submissive enters when doing extended BDSM play and is characterized by the sub’s ability to mentally separate themselves from the BDSM experience. Some of the signs of subspace are a lack of verbal communication, giddiness, intense emotionality such as crying or anger, listlessness and incoherence. A submissive can be brought out of subspace through verbal praise and rewards, hugs and positive touches on the skin. The submissive may need to consume water and a snack as they may have become dehydrated or experienced a drop in blood sugar during the scene. Preferred style of aftercare should be negotiated with the submissive prior to the scene. Make sure not to leave the submissive alone until you are sure that they are “grounded” again as people in subspace are very vulnerable and not capable of making sound judgments.
